After the success of The Hollywood Undead House Party back on December 18, 2020, Danny Wimmer Presents and Hollywood Undead joined forces again to bring the fans another livestream titled Hollywood Undead: Undead Unhinged. Considering the crazy, fun time of the last livestream, I expected another fantastic time. And Hollywood Undead comprised of “Danny” (vocals, guitars), “Johnny 3 Tears” (vocals), “Charlie Scene” (vocals, guitars), “J-Dog” (vocals, bass), and “Funny Man” (vocals) absolutely delivered that once again.
The livestream started off seeing various behind the scenes shot from the livestream before cutting over to the studio. Screens all over the walls, great lighting, and wasted no time with them kicking it off with “Whatever It Takes” from their 2017 album Five. Great energy, awesome sound, just the perfect thing to kick it off. But, something unexpected happened. The band stopped and started discussing the history behind the song. Well, that was not only unexpected but pretty damn cool. It became reminiscent of the VH1 Storytellers series. They followed up with the title track from their 2015 album Day of the Dead. I got a good laugh when “Charlie” explained he came up with the chorus while he was taking a piss.
The livestream continued on in this fashion but really picked it up a notch with “Coming In Hot” and then followed with the ever-popular “Undead”. The coolest part was having guest vocalist Alex Varkatzas, former lead vocalist of Atreyu, singing the screaming parts. The story behind this song was pretty powerful as even “Johnny 3 Tears” said if they didn’t listen to the label and make this song they may not have been where they are today. He also said the song was a big “Fuck You” anthem to the music industry. “Charlie” also added in they used an Ozzy Osbourne riff in the song.
And then another unexpected occurred. We cut back to the studio with a lot more people in it and Hollywood Undead sitting with acoustic guitars in hands and an entire string section (violins and cello). So not only are we getting stories to the songs, now we were getting unplugged too! “J-Dog” even said he didn’t feel like they made it as a band until they were playing with a string section and waited years to do it. They started the acoustic off with “Bullet” from 2011 American Tragedy. It’s such a happy sounding song with a depressing story. “Charlie” said he purposefully wanted the song to have that Jason Mraz style sound with those lyrics. They also surprised the fans with the never played live track “Rain”. The really true acoustic treat was performing “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Hollywood Undead finished off the show with some hard rocking songs including “Dead Bite”. I didn’t know John5 played guitar on that track. They also threw in “Levitate” that, “Johnny 3 Tears” said was about cocaine and closed the show with “Everywhere I Go”, which has a great story behind it, but that one I’ll leave for the fans to discover for themselves. My favorite song of the night though was “Bad Moon”. Such a fantastic song and “Danny”‘s vocals was so perfect with “Funny Man” nailing down the rap. The full setlist that night:
- Whatever It Takes
- Day of the Dead
- Bad Moon
