Friday, August 2nd was the second day of Gen Con 2019. Unlike Thursday, I was up bright and early for the first event of the morning that was all the way over at Lucas Oil Stadium at 9 AM ET. It was the first time I had trekked over to the stadium for any Gen Con event. The walk itself takes a few minutes but is completely indoors through the Indiana Convention Center. Down in the bowels of the Indiana Convention Center along the way I found a hallway filled with retro arcade games. Games that actually cost 25¢! When was the last time you found an arcade game that cheap? Beyond that, I discovered the members from Star Wars Indiana which included members of their 501st Legion and Rebel Legion. They had a mock trash compactor, with eyestalk included, where you could hop in and take photos. I may have jumped in and had a few taken. You can learn more about them HERE.
After finally making it over to Lucas Oil Stadium I headed into the meeting hall for a seminar on the upcoming Stargate RPG. The game was produced in the past by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) before they stopped publishing it. Now, it’s being re-done by Brad Ellis and Wes Walker of Wyvern Gaming. Their seminar offered a lot of intriguing details on the new game and they even had samples of character sheets from their demo events. Feedback has been good so far and they are projecting their release for Gen Con 2020. You can watch the entire seminar HERE.
Afterward, I took a quick run over to the actual gaming area at Lucas Oil Stadium. It was an amazing sight to have gaming going on where the NFL Indianapolis Colts play. I captured a brief video and photos that you can see below.

From there it was back over to the convention center to take the kids to their first event of the day, Starfinder Society Academy. Paizo had the Wabash Hall booked off to themselves for various Pathfinder and Starfinder events. The one my kids were playing in was specifically built for kids! Paizo created an event that was for kids only to run them through part of the adventure found in the Starfinder Beginner Box. The kids had a phenomenal time getting to play Starfinder for the first time and got to take home some souvenirs from the game. The GM was absolutely spectacular in keeping the kids interested and engaged.
We grabbed lunch right after, which included picking up the official Gen Con cup from r.Cup. The recyclable cup was not only beautiful, but it was also solid material and well worth buying. In fact, we bought three. You can find more info about their cups HERE. My wife and kids headed off to play the game Sparkle Kitty by Breaking Games. The game involves each player is a princess trapped in a tower. The only way out is to cast magic spells to break out. Those spells are in the form of cards where players have to match cards either by color or by word. Once a player clears out their hand, they can remove one piece of the tower. They had a lot of fun playing it. The game is family-friendly, can play up to 8 people, and is very affordable. You can find it on Breaking Games website HERE or at your closest Target or Walmart.
While they were doing that, I was making my way around the Exhibit Hall checking out multiple games. A few of the notable ones included 7th Sea now under Chaosium. The 2nd edition redone via Kickstarter by John Wick is now under the Chaosium umbrella. It’s a fun game of swashbuckling, adventure, and political intrigue. I was happy to see it come back again. The Clockwork: Dominion by Reliquary Game Studios brings steampunk to the world of Victorian horror. Using a playing card system instead of dice, the game is very unique and storyteller driven. But, the one that really caught my eye was Cthulhu Wars by Petersen Games. Playing one faction of monsters looking for world domination, this board game is strategy mixed with Lovecraft horror. Besides, when you can play Cthulhu himself (who is larger than a can of Monster Energy), how could you go wrong?

Afterward, I stepped outside the main entrance to grab some photos of cosplayers. There was an area where cosplayers gathered to allow people to photograph them. Though it’s assumed they’re providing consent standing in that area, I always asked first to ensure they were OK being photographed. There were so many great cosplayers there in that short timeframe I was there.

That late afternoon I ran back over to another part of the convention center for another seminar. This time it was Green Ronin Publishing to discuss their latest and greatest news and products. The hour-long discussion was very informative and even with the announcement of a new product line! You can find details of the seminar and the video HERE.
My son and I wrapped up our Day 2 heading over to play in a Star Wars LARP. For those who don’t know, LARP is short for Live Action Role Playing. It’s a style of gameplay where instead of sitting around a table acting out your character and rolling dice, it is literally engaging with other people in the game and trying to achieve your goals. In this game, we were all various bounty hunters trying to collect on bounties to win The Grand Hunt. My son had a blast getting to play in one for the first time and the GMs put in a lot of work for this very complex and twisted storyline.
Overall, it was a very busy and fun day of gaming and seminars and we were all looking forward to Saturday’s events.
