From The Pit To The Stream: The Hollywood Undead House Party – December 18, 2020

When you bring up the words “house party” and try to match it to a musical artist, no one fits it better than Hollywood Undead. With tours currently not taking place due to COVID-19, Hollywood Undead teamed up with Danny Wimmer Presents to provide us with the global livestreaming event titled The Hollywood Undead House Party. Hot on the heels of the release of their latest album New Empire Vol. 2 on December 4, 2020, the livestream event took place on December 18, 2020.

The livestream started out with an animated view of a house and people lined up out in front of the house. Hollywood Undead‘s Dead Bite (think big burly bouncer) is vetting the people on who gets to take place. The video transfers to a first person point of view of Dead Bite letting you into the party where the room you enter has graffiti on the walls, a keg in the corner, people playing beer pong, and even a blunt being passed off to you. And then Hollywood Undead comprised of “Danny” (vocals, guitars), “Johnny 3 Tears” (vocals), “Charlie Scene” (vocals, guitars), “J-Dog” (vocals, bass), and “Funny Man” (vocals) were ready to rock in that room. With Matt Oloffson joining on drums, the band performed in that very intimate room, including a couch that the band used for jumping and sitting while singing.

The band went unmasked for this event kicking it off with “Time Bomb” and “Enemy” from New Empire Vol. 1 and then following it up with “California Dreaming” from their 2017 album FiveAs I expected from any Hollywood Undead performance, this was shaping up to be hardcore, fun, and absolutely energic. The guys were putting on a performance any fan would expect to see from any of their live shows. Things got really fun when they performed “Heart of a Champion”, also from New Empire Vol. 1, as Spencer Charnas, vocalist of Ice Nine Kills broke through the wall of the room to perform with the band. And then midway through the song we received another surprise as Jacoby Shaddix, vocalist of Papa Roach, came through the other side of the wall to join in. Both of them appear in the official video for the song, so it was nice to see them join in for the livestream.

Hollywood Undead kept the performance fun and loose during the house party. They included cutscenes that made it appear you were drinking and smoking during as the concert went on. They included some video game sequences of the band fighting bad guys. It’s similar to the video game sequences in the video for “Heart of a Champion.” I laughed and smiled as they played “Everywhere I Go” from the 2008 Swan Songs, as “Johnny 3 Tears” slept on the couch during the performance. But, one of the best sequences was watching the band chatting in between songs and two party crashers come in and start drinking their beer. “Johnny 3 Tears” tells Dead Bite to oust them. Dead Bite then proceeds to remove the party crashers by throwing them through the wall!

The latter half of the set has the band changing locations to a more studio-like set. They started off in a very dark room with a red bird symbol on the back wall performing “Idol” from New Empire Vol. 2. This song held a very morbid tone and is definitely unlike their other music. Rapper Tech N9ne, who performs on the single, performed on this video off-stage. One of my favorite parts of the show was seeing them perform “Comin’ Thru the Stereo” also from New Empire Vol. 2. Hyro the Hero who performs with them on the single showed up on set to perform the song. If two artists were ever meant to perform together it was definitely Hyro the Hero and Hollywood Undead. They made a perfect combination and that single is awesome. The band wraps up the show back in the house party room with “Bullet” from 2011 American Tragedy and the ever-popular “Undead” from Swan Songs.

The full setlist from The Hollywood Undead House Party was:

This was a truly fun and entertaining livestream. Hollywood Undead is a band that truly has a fantastic harmony in their vocals, energic music, and who knows how to make a performance memorable. The set locations were perfect for the feel of this livestream and they had fun wrecking it once the show was over. Overall, a truly great time and performance from Hollywood Undead and great selection from Danny Wimmer Presents to work with them to present this livestream.
