FROM THE PIT TO THE STREAM: KORN MONUMENTAL – LOS ANGELES CA – APRIL 24, 2021

If you ask yourself or your friends, “What band is a must-see live?”, you’ll get a variety of answers. The one that I’ll always toss out there is Korn. The band from California is considered one of the originators of the nu-metal genre. Nu metal combines metal with elements from other musical genres such as funk, hip hop, grunge, etc… and there’s no doubt that Korn‘s music is exactly just that. This weekend Korn delivered their Korn: Monumental livestream to fans on Saturday, April 24th. Produced by Danner Wimmer Presents, they spared no expense filming this tremendous event at the Stranger Things: The Drive-Into Experience theater in Los Angeles, CA. With the backdrop of Los Angeles at night, Jonathan Davis (vocals), Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu (bass), James “Munky” Shaffer (guitar), Brian “Head” Welch (guitar), and Ray Luzier (drums) were getting ready to deliver a very memorable event.

As intro music played, a camera panned across the stage and the theater to give fans the scope of this massive production, Multiple cameras, drones, and even a crane camera were used for the event. The band slowly made their way across the stage, took their places and kicked off with “Victimized” from their 2013 The Paradigm Shift. A massive movie screen played various odd shapes behind them as they played through. Korn sounded amazing and followed up with “Cold” from their most recent album The Nothing released in 2019. If you weren’t moshing around in your living room during this song, wrecking your couch, you may want to have your pulse checked. Korn laid it out hard and heavy and I was already loving this livestream. And it certainly wouldn’t be a Korn concert without them playing “Falling Away From Me” from their 1999 album IssuesHearing those guitar and bass riffs had me banging my head and singing along.

One of the things I truly love about Korn is not only the energy from their live performances but their utilization of their instruments. “Munky” and “Head” deliver such beautiful sounds from their guitars and they rarely ever sound the same through any of their songs. “Fieldy” slaps away at that bass like it’s no tomorrow and Ray‘s drum performances are outstanding. Add in Jonathan‘s very wonderful and talented vocals from clear singing to guttural screaming and it’s the complete package. I also have to call out Korn is one of those rare bands that lets the bass riffs standout on their own and not just be used as a backing sound. I love it.

Korn was all over the stage during the performance moving around from side to side the whole time. Jonathan would sometimes keep himself at the mic stand and other times bounce across the stage as he sang. “Fieldy” even took to getting on top of the speakers at one point as he played. Korn gave this livestream the same attention they would give any other live show. The only odd piece was that they played straight through the set with no breaks to speak to the fans watching.

The setlist had some truly great selections that night including the must-plays of “Coming Undone”, “Freak on a Leash”, and “Can You Hear Me”. I really liked hearing “You’ll Never Find Me” from The Nothing“Alone I Break” from the 2002 Untouchables, and “Narcissistic Cannibal” from their 2011 The Path of Totality. Overall it was a fantastic selection of songs. The full setlist is below:
