FROM THE PIT TO THE CROWD: COPPER BONES – HOUSE OF BLUES ORLANDO – LAKE BUENA VISTA FL – JANUARY 6, 2023

Copper Bones

About 5 years ago I was at House of Blues Orlando covering a show for another publication. The headliner was Pop Evil with a young band called Badflower. Opening for them was a local metal duo consisting of a bassist/vocalist and a drummer. I was truly amazed by their sound and performance that night. That band was Copper Bones. They were performing songs from their debut album Exhibit A released in 2016. Now, the band was performing as part of WJRR’s Native Noise: Orlando Rocks! show for their new album Kings literally released that day.

When Ryan Fleming (bass, vocals) and Greg Blachstein (drums) stepped onto the stage the crowd provided them with a huge roar and applause. These fans were ready to rock out that night and knowing their music from Exhibit A, they were sure to give the fans what they wanted. Greg started off with the song as Ryan began to play and sing the first track off Kings titled “Monster”. He didn’t get far into the song when he could sense something was off. He pulled off his wireless connection, plugged it in, and then got back to playing. I absolutely loved this track. Totally heavy and Ryan is a fantastic singer. Greg whips away at the drums and immediately had that crowd headbanging along to the song.

Copper Bones music is so good and seriously impressive as a duo. “Bottomfeeder” has this deep and heavy guitar riff where you can’t help but start banging your head, throwing horns, or even moshing. And yes, I said guitar because even though Ryan plays bass, he plays more like a six-string guitar and uses his pedals to emulate that sound as well. It’s pretty fucking cool to hear live. And Greg’s drums beautifully intertwine to give that heavy rock sound. They even slowed it down a little when they brought out a friend to perform on the keyboard for the song “Satisfied”. And while it is slower than most of their songs, they still know how to keep it heavy. “Off With His Head”  is another great tune off Kings. The crowd absolutely loved this song and were singing along “Off with his head and bury the dead!” And the moment Ryan screams “Bury your dead!” you felt the urge to throw down with someone in the pit.

But, we also got treated to one of my favorite songs from Exhibit A in “The Vulture”. This was the song that really grabbed my attention the first time I heard them perform. Between the guitar and drums and Ryan’s vocals this is absolutely one hot track. The House of Blues crowd lost their minds when they played it and a mosh pit was going hard during the song. They also performed “I Am The Wolf” from that album.

Ryan and Greg are a fantastic duo who make killer rock music. And their live shows really showcase their talent, great songs, and how much the crowds appreciate their performance. It was a stellar night for them and look forward to their next performance. Don’t miss the chance to see these guys in action. They are totally worth it.
