FROM THE PIT TO THE STREAM: BEARTOOTH: THE JOURNEY BELOW – JULY 14, 2021

During the pandemic Beartooth was hard at wrapping up the finishing touches of their fourth studio album Below via Red Bull Records. The album was released on June 25, 2021 to rave reviews and praise. And with that followed a tour announcement starting on August 14th with Wage War and Dragged Under. But, before they head out in front of the crowds again, Beartooth announced a livestream titled The Journey Below scheduled for July 14, 2021. And let me tell you, this livestream was a fun ride.

The event started off with various images, all in the Beartooth purple, with a skeletal hand reaching out, skulls, crosses, ribbons, and patterned waves. The countdown timer to the start of the event hit and when it reached 0:00, Caleb Shomo (vocals), Zach Huston (guitar), Will Deely (guitar), Oshie Bichar (bass), and Connor Denis (drums) took to the stage. A massive stage with a high drum riser and ramp for the band to get up and join Connor up there to play. Was Beartooth ready to perform? Hell yes they were!

They started off heavy ripping it up with “Below” and “Devastation” from the new album. Both songs have fast guitar riffs, a headbanging beat, and the vocals are intense and passionate. And when the pyro hit the stage during “Devastation”, it was absolutely mind-blowing. I’m looking forward to seeing that live! This also gave us the chance to see them perform some of the new album tracks live. Some of the other songs included “Fed Up” with such a great instrumental built in the song, “Dominate”“Hell Of It” with some bad ass singing from Caleb, and “Skin“.

But, Beartooth also treated the fans to some of the, as Caleb called it, “old shit.” This included “Hated”, which has such a killer drum sound from Connor, and “Sick of Me” from the 2016 album Aggressive and “Beaten In Lips” and “Body Bag” from their 2014 debut album Disgusting. I absolutely love “Body Bag” with the fast pace, great rhythm, and that chorus just has such a great message.

When they played some songs from the 2018 album Disease, things got a little emotional. Caleb said not to mind him during “You Never Know” as he was said “I’m going to lose my shit for a minute” and during the instrumental proceeded to mosh around on stage and let loose. It was awesome to see the band having fun on stage. Right before performing the title track, Caleb got extremely emotional talking about how he wasn’t sure if he would have made it through the pandemic and how much the band truly appreciated all the love and support from the fans. That was such a heartwarming and heartbreaking moment to see. I’m glad he made it through.

The band wrapped up The Last Riff” from Below, which is an instrumental jam from Beartooth. This was such a great livestream and provided an insight as to their upcoming tour. If they keep this setlist, the fans are going to be moshing and headbanging so hard fans will need the next day to recoup. The full setlist from the event is below (no pun intended):
